Sheet is slit and stretched in a single operation to form an interconnected diamond mesh — lightweight, rigid and with no material lost as scrap. JASSCO runs three mechanical expanding machines.

An expanding machine makes a row of staggered slits in the sheet and stretches it in the same stroke. Repeated along the sheet, this produces a continuous mesh of diamond-shaped openings with strands and bonds that stay joined. Because nothing is punched out, expanded metal is efficient in material use.
The catalogue lists standard (raised), flattened and grating forms. Expanded mesh is specified by strand width, mesh pitch (the long and short way of the diamond) and orientation, alongside material grade and thickness.

Perforated metal has holes punched out of solid sheet. Expanded metal is slit and stretched, so no material is removed and the openings are diamond-shaped.
The mechanical expanding machines are listed up to 2.5 mm thickness and 1,250 mm sheet width.
